Requirements For Use

  • Operator Training: Utility cart operators must receive proper training to understand the vehicle’s operating procedures and safety measures.
  • Lighting and Warning Devices: Vehicles must be equipped with lights and reflectors when operated during periods of low visibility or at night. Additionally, all utility carts should have an audible warning device to alert other workers and pedestrians, enhancing safety in crowded or noisy operational areas.
  • Seat Belts and Rollover Protection: While seat belts and rollover protective structures (ROPS) are not universally required for all utility carts, they are crucial for those used in hazardous conditions or over rough terrain. If the vehicle is likely to be used in situations where rollovers could occur, fitting it with ROPS or purchasing carts with ROPS included is required in order to reduce the risk of injuries.
  • General Vehicle Safety and Maintenance: Regular inspections and maintenance of utility carts are necessary to ensure they are safe to operate. This includes regularly checking the functionality of brakes, lights, and other critical components.

Proper Tie Down

The proper way to tie down a John Deere Gator is with a four-point tie-down using heavy-duty ratchet straps. This ensures the vehicle remains stationary even if the trailer bounces or shifts.

Required Equipment:

  • 4 Heavy-Duty Ratchet Straps: Rated for the weight of your Gator (usually 2,000+ lbs break strength).
  • Soft Loops (Optional but Recommended): These prevent the metal hooks of your ratchet straps from scratching the Gator’s paint or frame.
  • Wheel Chocks (Optional): For added stability.

The 4-Point Tie-Down Procedure:

The goal is to pull the machine in four opposite directions to lock it in place.

  1. Load & Position: Drive the Gator onto the trailer. Aim for 60% of the weight in front of the trailer axle and 40% behind it.
  2. Park & Brake: Put the Gator in “Park” and engage the parking brake.
  3. Front Straps (Pulling Forward): Attach two straps to the front frame or the front tow hooks (if equipped) of the Gator. Run these straps forward to the front corners of the trailer.
  4. Rear Straps (Pulling Backward): Attach two straps to the rear frame or the rear hitch receiver/tow loops. Run these straps backward to the rear corners of the trailer.
  5. Tighten Evenly: Ratchet the straps down. You want to compress the Gator’s suspension slightly (about an inch or two). This keeps the straps tight when the vehicle bounces on the road. Do not fully bottom out the suspension.

Operating Instructions

  • Pre-Operation Checks: Conduct safety inspections before using the cart, including lights, brakes, steering, and alarms. Report issues to supervisors.
  • Driving Safety: Operate at safe speeds, avoid sharp turns, yield to pedestrians, and stop at intersections. Caution is required on slippery surfaces, slopes, and near water.
  • Cart Security: Remove keys when not in use to prevent unauthorized access.
  • Prohibited Actions: No cell phone use while driving, no passengers in the cart bed, and no overloading.
  • Load Limits: Adhere to load restrictions and ensure oversized loads are properly flagged.
  • Parking Protocol: Use parking brakes, especially on inclines, and turn wheels away from water bodies as a precaution.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Follow local laws for public road usage and yield to pedestrians on private roads.
  • Maintenance and Reporting: Report any issues, accidents, or unauthorized modifications to supervisors or maintenance teams immediately.
